The Munich Olympics
Munich Olympics were known as the games of XX Olympiad. This Olympics went down as the worst Olympics off the field in history. 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were kidnapped and murdered due to terrorist events. There were, however, good highlights of the Olympics, one of those were the Australian swimmer Shane Gould won three gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal at the age of 15. Also the American swimmer Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals in 1 Olympics, which was a record until 2008 when Michael Phelps broke the record with 8 gold medals. Also “the most controversial game in international basketball history” took place when the USA took on the USSR and due to a dispute between the USSR coaches and the referees the USSR won 51-50. The second place medal was never accepted and today is still in a vault in Lausanne Switzerland.
The First Cricket World Cup
The first Cricket World Cup was held in England. The stadiums were in Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham, and London. The Cricket world cup is also called the Prudential Cup. There were 16 teams and only 8 teams made the cut. Runs are when the person runs from one base to the other base and goes back and forth from that, and Glenn Turner, from New Zealand, had the most runs with 333. Wickets are the gates behind the batter and if a pitcher hits these wickets the batter is out and Gary Gilmour, from Australia, had the most wicket hits with 11 wicket hits.
Secretariat
Secretariat is a horse that was not suppose to be as fast and as durable as people predicted. There was only one person that believed in Secretariat and that person’s name was Penny Twitty, who picked the horse on a coin toss that she has with the richest man in the world at that time. Secretariat set 6 new track records on tracks that she was suppose to come in last for and was the 9th horse to win the Triple Crown, which is winning the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat set another record by winning the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths, a length is a horse’s length. Secretariat set records at the Kentucky Derby, with a time of 1:59 and at the Belmont Stakes and both of those still stand as records today.
The Merger into the NFL
In 1970 the American Football league and the National League merged to become one league to make 26 NFL teams. Before the merger with the two leagues the American Football League was becoming more famous for its future Hall Of Famer players such as Don Shula, Bob Griese, and many others. In 1972 the Miami Dolphins became the only team to go undefeated and win the super bowl. The main reason for the merger was to make more money.
